Why is rest calling to you?

People often assume that Sacred Rest is just simply about sleeping more, taking breaks and naps, etc.  But these things are just natural results of a much deeper inquiry and unfolding.

At the heart of this philosophy is ‘resting’ from the false character that most of us naturally become conditioned to maintain.  The amount of energy this takes is significant.

Yosh has often spoken to the concept of depression translating to ‘deep rest’.  That point at which we ultimately crash from trying to ‘hold up’ something that is not true.  Our body refuses to do it, and shuts down in a way.  Allowing us space for this deeper inquiry.  This is why I don’t see depression as something wrong, but more of a step in the right direction.  Towards a more authentic expression of what is innate within us all.

I often see it as ground zero, or a blank canvas.  As opposed to someone who might appear to be highly successful, owning a company, loads of friends, community status, etc.  If that was built from this false character…well then it can be quite a journey to burn that house down.  When the call for Truth comes knocking, it’s quite painful to ignore.

This ‘rest’ is not for everyone.  And is not better or more enlightened than a different path.  You can’t really desire it because that would just be stemming from the ego.  It just starts happening, and the act of surrender becomes more and more obvious.

The flavors in which this character maintenance shows up is a spectrum.  Here are some common ones - all essentially the same energy beneath the expression.

  • ‘The healing trap’ or many traps of the spiritual path ~ a state of never-ending seeking to some delusional destination.  Constantly trying to be the ‘best version’ of our self.  Trying to heal, fix, or better something that is basically just a psychological process - not real - although can be very sneaky at appearing and feeling real.

  • Chasing external success ~ whether that’s through the grind of our capitalist structures, or trying to be someone of status, fame, popularity, etc.

  • Trying to control everything in our experience along with those around us.

Like I said before this deeper rest might not be knocking at your door, but if it is, I recommend getting quiet.  I find it takes a flaming sword to cut out all of the distractions these days, where I can actually hear the inner knowing within.  Especially in the spiritual melting pot of Boulder, CO!  Whenever I practice this rest, whether it be laying in bed, chilling in nature, or having some tea during a day of silence, things become quite clear and obvious.  If you struggle to do this on your own, we offer ways to support.

Yosh and I like to say that there are actually no decisions needed in life, just the obvious next step.  The ‘way’.  If you feel confused, try getting quiet and wait.
